Regulations

(Three sets of eyes constantly looking at us!)

The public needs to be assured that products they use are environmentally friendly and do not cause unintended harm to users. Milorganite and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District work hard to ensure that all Milorganite products not only meet but exceed all applicable regulations.

The first set of eyes: US EPA 40 CFR Part 503

Milorganite products belong to a class of materials called biosolids. Biosolids are the residual microbes that have digested nutrients out of sewage waste streams. These EPA regulations define the use of biosolids as a fertilizer at two distinct tiers. The first tier is using biosolids as a fertilizer on non-food crops (lawns, grain fields, and the like). The second tier is the so-called Exceptional Quality or EQ definition. This allows biosolids that contain exceptionally low amounts of heavy metals and pathogens to be used on food crops such as vegetable gardens, fruit trees and similar locations.

All MilorganiteĀ® branded fertilizers have met and exceeded the 1993 US EPA 40 CFR Part 503 EQ regulatory requirements plus applicable state standards for metals, pathogens and vector attraction. We have done this since their inception in 1993. See our table comparing Milorganite's values to the US EPA's Exceptional Quality Guidelines.

All Milorganite branded fertilizers can be used on lawns, vegetables, flowers or wherever else you would use a fertilizer. Used according to directions, there is no possibility of adverse effects from the trace concentrations of metals or pathogenic organisms which are below the level of detection.

The second set of eyes: AAPFCO (state agencies)

Also, because we are sold as a fertilizer, we must meet each individual states’ guidelines for labeling and product quality. Milorganite is a member of AAPFCO, the American Association of Plant Food Control Officials. This allows us first-hand knowledge of pending regulatory changes.

The third set of eyes: Canadian Regulations

Milorganite meets and exceeds all regulatory requirements of the CFIA, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, for shipments of biosolids into Canada. Each load is tested to insure of zero pathogen level, as required by statute.
