How to Apply Milorganite® Fertilizer to Your Lawn

This month I decided to make a video showing you an easy way to apply Milorganite to your lawn. One of my favorite days to throw down is Memorial Day which is coming up this weekend.

One thing I know though is that there are those of you out there who have a fear of applying and it stops you from taking action. I hope that with today’s video, and this corresponding blog post, you will get up the courage you need to make that first application. Once you do, you will find that the learning curve is easy to overcome and you’ll feel like a pro in no time.

For The More Advanced

In this application video, I used the “bag rate” which states that the 32 lb bags covers up to 2,500 sq ft. If I am spreading that across a 2,500 sq ft lawn areas, that equates to 12.9 lbs of Milorganite per 1,000 sq ft.

32/2.5 = 12.9

This means I am applying 12.9 lbs of Milorganite across each 1,000 sq ft of lawn area. I’m mostly concerned with nitrogen this time of year and applying at 12.9 lbs/1,000 is going to give me .78 lbs of Nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft of lawn.

I know this because the analysis of Milorganite is 6-4-0. That means 6% of the nutrients in that 32lb bag are going to deliver me nitrogen.

I am applying 12.9 lbs of Milorganite per 1,000 so the math then is:

12.9 x .06 = .774

I rounded that to .79 which is just over ¾ lbs of nitrogen for each 1,000 sq ft of lawn space. That is a perfect amount leading into the later spring and early summer.

With this application rate, you should see visual results in the lawn within 7-14 days as long as you are keeping the turf irrigated and it’s actively growing. The good news with Milorganite is its slow release so it won’t hammer the lawn too hard even as temperatures are going up.
